Information on the history of emblems associated with groups of people, especially
families, is presented at the museum’s Heraldry and Family Symbols section.
The section throws light upon the history, customs and rules related to coats of
arms, which became hereditary symbols for specific families in Europe since the 12th
century. Special attention is also paid to non-western ‘heraldic’ traditions such
as the totem culture, found in different parts of the world, or the Samurai family
symbols in Japan.
